Fifth-graders during this year reach the culmination of their St. Odilia primary grade-school career! As a result, preparation activities for transition to middle school, and the change from a self-contained classroom to a departmentalized program begin. Students work to become independent, responsible learners as homework load and academic expectations increase.
Fifth-graders participate in several public-speaking assignments and develop a science project that they present in the science fair. Throughout the year, students develop a sense of self through self-esteem, decision making, academic confidence, and faith development. The teachers stress higher-level thinking skills with problem solving and analysis of academic material.
As the oldest students in the school's elementary wing, fifth-graders are responsible for recycling, bus signs, lunch count, and slide presentations at liturgies. Also, students have a 'first-grade buddy' to encourage leadership among peers, and to help the younger students with art, language arts, and math activities.
